Signs hard water is costing you money
- White scale on taps, shower screens and kettle elements
- Soap and shampoo that will not lather properly
- Water heaters rumbling, or failing years early
- Dishwashers and washing machines wearing out fast
- Aerators and shower heads blocking up every few months
How we handle it
- Test the water and the layout
We check the hardness and look at where the softener can go — the builder loop in the garage, the utility room, or a new tie-in on the main.
- Size it to the house
Sizing is based on hardness and how much water the household actually uses, not just the number of bathrooms.
- Install it properly
Tied into the main after the meter, with a bypass, drain and correct fittings, so it can be serviced without shutting the house down.
- Set it and show you
We set the regeneration, show you how to add salt and what to watch for, and check the pressure has not dropped.
Why almost every San Antonio house has this problem
Our water is hard because it filters through limestone before it reaches the aquifer, and no amount of plumbing changes that. The minerals drop out wherever water is heated or evaporates, which is why tanks fill with sediment, tankless heat exchangers scale up, cartridges seize and fixtures crust over. Softening the water does not fix pipe that is already damaged, but it stops the clock on everything installed after it.
Salt or salt-free?
A traditional salt-based softener removes the minerals through ion exchange — it is the only type that genuinely softens water, and it is what protects heaters and appliances best. A salt-free conditioner changes the way minerals behave so they are less likely to stick, needs no salt and wastes no water, but the water stays hard. We will tell you which one suits your house, your budget and the problem you actually want solved.
If the builder left a loop
Many newer homes in Alamo Ranch, Timberwood Park and Stone Oak have a softener loop roughed into the garage. That makes installation much simpler — the tie-in already exists, it just needs the unit, the drain and the bypass done properly.
What it costs
It depends on what the job turns out to need, so we diagnose first. Your plumber then gives you an upfront price, and you approve it before anything starts.
Questions people ask
Will a softener fix my existing scale?
No. It stops new scale forming. Existing build-up in a tank heater is dealt with by flushing, and in a tankless unit by descaling.
Does softened water damage pipes?
No, but it can wear the anode rod in a water heater faster, so we check it as part of maintenance.
Can you repair the softener I already have?
Yes. Valve heads, timers, resin and drain lines all fail eventually, and a repair is usually cheaper than a new unit.
Where does it have to go?
After the meter and before the water heater, somewhere it can drain. The garage loop, the utility room and the main entry point are the usual spots.
