Emergency call-out fees explained
An emergency bill in San Antonio usually has three parts: a call-out or service fee for coming out and finding the fault, the repair itself, and an after-hours premium if it is a night, weekend or holiday. The call-out fee is the part people get surprised by, because it is charged even when the fix is small. Ask for it before anyone is dispatched — any honest company will tell you on the phone.
What actually moves the price
- How hard the fault is to reach
An exposed pipe under a sink is cheap to fix. The same break under a slab, in a wall or eight feet down in the yard is not.
- What time you call
Nights, weekends and holidays carry a premium almost everywhere in the city.
- What the pipe is made of
Old galvanized and thin-wall copper often need more replaced than the piece that failed.
- How long it has been leaking
A leak that has soaked a wall or floor adds restoration work that has nothing to do with the plumbing.
- Repair or replace
A repeat failure in the same line is usually cheaper to replace once than to patch a third time.
How we price work
- We tell you the call-out charge on the phone, before we come.
- The plumber diagnoses the fault and gives you a price for the repair.
- You approve that price before any work starts.
- If we find something else once we open it up, we stop and re-quote rather than adding it to the bill.
How to keep the bill down
- Shut the water off early — most of the cost in a bad leak is damage, not pipe. Find your valve now.
- Don't pour chemicals down a blocked drain; it rarely works and makes the job harder.
- Fix a repeat blockage properly once instead of clearing it three times. A camera shows the cause.
- After a leak, keep the invoice and ask SAWS about a bill adjustment. How that works.
- Insulate exposed pipe before winter. Freeze checklist.
Questions people ask
How much do emergency plumbers charge in San Antonio?
Most emergency visits are a service call of roughly $50 to $250, plus the repair itself, with an after-hours premium of around 20% to 50% at night, on weekends and on holidays. Clearing a single drain or fixing a toilet usually lands in the low hundreds; a burst pipe, slab leak or water heater replacement costs more. The table above has typical ranges for each job.
What is an emergency call-out fee?
It is the charge for sending a plumber to your home and diagnosing the problem, separate from the repair. Some companies waive or credit it if you go ahead with the work. Always ask what it is before the plumber is dispatched. We tell you ours on the phone.
Is it cheaper to wait until morning?
Sometimes, and we will tell you honestly when it is. If water is running and you cannot stop it, or sewage is backing up, waiting costs more in damage than the after-hours premium.
Why will you not quote a price on the phone?
Because the same symptom has very different causes. What we can do on the phone is tell you the likely range and what the visit costs, then give you a firm price once the plumber has seen it — before any work starts.
Do you charge for the diagnosis?
There is a charge for coming out and finding the fault, and we tell you what it is when you call. It is not a surprise on the invoice.
Will my insurance pay for it?
Most home policies cover the damage the water caused, not the plumbing repair itself. We document the cause and the repair so you can file the claim.
Can I get the water bill adjusted after a leak?
SAWS has a leak adjustment process once the leak is repaired. Keep the invoice — our guide explains what usually helps a claim.
